MOTEL VOID: “Two spooky kids from a missing milk carton never got found, died, and became ghosts. These ghosts got stuck in a room covered in cobwebs. After freeing their hands from the sheets of self-criticism, they grabbed a couple of guitars.” Where exactly do these ‘ghosts’ reside? And do they feel like a part of the local scene?)
GHOST PROM: i think that these ghosts are the best versions of ourselves (that’s what we strive for) i don’t know if we’re always able to get there but when the creativity takes over and we’re creating for ourselves and not worried about what other people think then that’s it. i also think of the ghosts living inside of us from the people we’ve loved who have passed away – i feel like a piece of them lives on through us and by doing that we keep them alive. we very much feel a part of our local Hudson Valley scene. i grew up around punk rock and i think there’s a certain camaraderie, love, and respect that everyone shows each other, we’re trying to keep that spirit alive within ourselves and find likeminded bands in that respect. it feels like slowly but surely it’s starting to happen.
MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a beautiful new single ‘Let Me Alone’. Will it be a part of your new/debut album?
GHOST PROM: thank you for saying that. ‘let me alone’ is our favorite song on the album. really, it’s what started this new album. i had just met aaron mones who lived down the street. we were planning on making the album somewhere else but i went down to aaron’s studio one day and we recorded this song. it was effortless and really spontaneous and was exactly the way i wanted to make this record.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about your writing and recording process?
GHOST PROM: i (cameron) wrote this song thinking about when i was a teenager, how much freedom i had, obsessing over films, and watching probably 3-4 a day. it was my escape from when things got too much, when i couldn’t help but keep making bad decisions. i imagined getting back to that, not having to do a job that i fucking hated, wanting to go home and run around the back yard with eden and our dog, townes. getting back to a simpler way of living. expecting less from people, places and things and appreciating what i already have.
MOTEL VOID: Who is your biggest influence right now?
GHOST PROM: i’ve always felt more comfortable around women and i think there are so many amazing women that inspire me right now. #1 for me is eden. she’s the most fascinating human being i know. And there’s also people like billie eilish, dani miller from surfbort, sam quartin from the bobby lees, florence pugh, mary oliver, enda monks from dilly dally and amy taylor from amyl and the sniffers have been a huge inspiration to us lately.
MOTEL VOID: What are your plans for the rest of 2023? Any live shows ahead?
GHOST PROM: we’ve got several new york shows to round out the year. first at blackbird cafe in kingston on 11.4, at colony in woodstock on 11.12, at berlin in manhattan on 12.12, and at tubbys in kingston on 12.14.
