INTERVIEW: SENTIR

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Memphis, Tennessee. How would you describe the current music scene there?

SENTIR: the music scene is great here. I’m lucky I live right around the corner in midtown where most local bands play their first shows as they start making music. I’ve found some great artists living here.

MOTEL VOID: You live in France now, though, if I’m not mistaken? What was the reason for coming to Europe? When did you move to France?

SENTIR: I actually moved back to memphis, haha. I went to school in France for a bit in college and I knew I wanted to live there again after school. I became an English teach and went a year after graduating, but Covid messed so much up with my plans and I had to move back to America after awhile after 3 different lockdowns.

MOTEL VOID: How would you compare music scenes in Europe/US?

SENTIR: wish I could accurately answer this! The first time I lived in Europe I was making music yet and didn’t get to do much other than going to a music festival that was put on by the government seasonally. I forgot what it was called but it was so interesting that the local government in each French region would let us buy tickets and they bussed us outside of the city to a large warehouse in a field and thousands of people were there. it was mostly the top French rappers performing which was fun to see. You don’t have things like that in America. I do wish I could have found the local music scene in both cities I lived in, in france though. I know how much fun it is in Memphis and know it would have been great over there.

MOTEL VOID: One of your influences is a singer-songwriter Alex G. I love his music as well, what’s your favorite record?

SENTIR: Shoooooot. On his Beach Music album he has a song that ends the record called “Snot” and I think I would say that’s my favorite from him. It was a strange experience listening to it for the first time years ago. I had never heard it before but I felt like it was a song I used to listen to on the radio as a kid in the 90’s. I thought I knew the words and the melody, but obviously didn’t. I haven’t been able to explain it. I even asked my friend when it came out and who the artist was because I was so confused. But I love that song still today.

MOTEL VOID: I really enjoy your new single ‘Broke My Guitar’. Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of this track?

SENTIR: I was singing about my acoustic guitar being broke on the way home one weekend this year… it was the first line to the song. I liked it and recorded it on my phone. I recently did tests on all the keys my voice works in with how I like to sing so once I got home and pulled out that broken acoustic guitar with only 5 strings on it and tested some chords and it worked perfectly. From that first line I sang I began to write the rest of the song and the entire process probably took 4 hours or so. But I was extremely happy with it by the end of the day.
