MOTEL VOID: You’re based in London, UK. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you feel that you’re part of it?
COSMORAT: There are so many talented players, and it’s so eclectic. It’s kind of like people took their iPod classics, put all of their Limewire downloads on shuffle, and turned it into a music scene. You can go to any given show on any given night and see three acts with three totally different visions.
I do wish I was a bit more immersed in the scene; unfortunately, I’m a little held back by some crippling social anxiety and late night work. However, I do think we have managed to carve out a niche group of weirdos in the scene. I love being surrounded by a bunch of passionate music freaks.
MOTEL VOID: Could you recommend some of your favorite local venues and artists?
COSMORAT: I will always stan The George Tavern. They let me put on my first show when I moved to London and are so supportive to starting out acts. They also put on so many killer shows there. Just all around a great place to play and be.
I am a massive fan of our pals Fräulein. They always play so well together, but their new stuff is brain meltingly cool.
Some other really great acts I really enjoy around London are Winnx, Ebbb, and MAY.
MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single ‘No Sleep’. Will it be part of your new record?
COSMORAT: No Sleep is the final track on the record. The EP is called “Evil Adjacent”, and it’s about being best friends with the devil… kind of.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?
COSMORAT: I usually get really anti-social for 8 hours and write lyrics, melody, and groove. Then, I take the song to Olly, our guitarist, who basically writes counterpoint guitar lines. Then we deconstruct the idea with Danio, our producer, and Lorenzo, our drummer, and we all add our ideas to it and have philosophical debates about how certain snare sounds will make you feel.
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?
COSMORAT: To write a song that smells like campfire smoke burrowed into your hoodie, shines like sodium lamps at 5am, tastes like petrol station coffee, and feels like laying on a concrete sidewalk while dew forms on the grass.
