INTERVIEW: CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE

MOTEL VOID: Could you introduce your project in a few sentences? I haven’t found much information about you on the internet to be honest…

CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE: Casual Blood Service is a project I began working on when I was about 16 years old, but I put it aside to be in another band, which ended, so now I am finally starting it up at 20! I’m a big fan of lo-fi production so I like to use a lot of those elements in my music. I want this project to feel nostalgic and melancholy, kind of a homage to my adolescence and the uncomfortableness of becoming an adult.

MOTEL VOID: Who is your biggest inspiration right now?

CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE: My biggest inspiration right now is probably the Starry Cat album. Honestly, all of Sam Ray’s projects have a massive impact on my music. His other bands like Teen Suicide and Julia Brown got me into making music when I was about 14.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single ‘My Secret Friend’. Will it be part of your new record?

CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE: This is my first single under Casual Blood Service, so it won’t be a part of record just yet (but hopefully sometime in the near future). I will be releasing some more music soon, so stay tuned!

MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of your songs?

CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE: This particular song I wrote a while ago, I believe when I was 17, so I’ve been working on it for some time now. The drum beat is from my old Yamaha keyboard, it was one of the drum presets. I then I added some more layers with another drum machine of mine. All of that was recorded on a shoebox cassette recorder and the rest was digital. I normally write my songs on either my guitar or my keyboard, then eventually after I listen to a voice memo of the song many many times, I can hear the rest of the parts in my head and start recording. My process is quite DIY and on a budget, so I record everything at home then send it over to my friend Raye to mix it.

MOTEL VOID: Your plans for 2024?

CASUAL BLOOD SERVICE: I have some releases and gigs planned. I want to be creating a lot this year. And making sure I share what I create too. It feels great to finally be making and releasing my own music, I’ve been wanting to do since I was a kid. So, I am very excited for 2024! If you are interested to find me on social media my Instagram and Tik Tok are both @casualbloodservice.
