MOTEL VOID: miaw is an “international project” – one half of the band is from Denmark, the other from the Netherlands. Do you cooperate online or do you live in the same city at the moment?
MIAW: Actually, since we lived in the same city, Cologne, for some years, a lot of the songs are made by us being in one of our rooms together. We would have a “main” laptop where one would work on building the track while the other found synth sounds, samples etc. on the other computer. Then we’d change positions a lot, so after one gives their take on something, the other takes over and brings their ideas. Mostly we’d make a track when we were supposed to hang out and drink wine, and hang out and drink wine when we’re supposed to make a track.
But still, a lot of times we would work apart and send each other the new version or files, which have sometimes resultet in quite a mess in the projects!
MOTEL VOID:You’ve just released your first single ‘ATT’. Will it be part of your new record?
MIAW: Yes, ATT is the first single of a 6-track record that we will release in fall.
MOTEL VOID: Could you tell us more about the recording and writing process of this song?
MIAW: We made most of the song pretty much in one afternoon at Liza’s place. We had seen a very happy dog running and filmed it, which we put up on the screen in slowmotion and on repeat. Thereafter the song came all by itself. We would take turns in programming drums, adding synths, recording vocal ideas etc.
When we can’t really find the right melodies we try different things like pitching, speeding up, slowing down. So the part where both are singing is Frederik dubbing and making up lyrics for a sped up gibberish vocal take from Liza. The lyrics came out of whatever we felt the words sounded like, which also gives the sentences a very weird structure. Probably would not talk like that irl!
MOTEL VOID: Your biggest inspirations right now?
MIAW: Good question, we’re very into different kinds of music but atm experimental sampling is very present. So artists like Cities Aviv, Draag Me and Ulla is running a lot. Also some US dreamy, breakcore, breakbeat – shoegaze artists like James K, Black Balloons, Dream Weaver is also a huge vibe. There are a lot of Copenhagen based music that we’re really inspired by these are Tettix Hexer, Drop, Splitscreen and Lyra Valenza,
MOTEL VOID: Your plans for the rest of the year?
MIAW: Our plans is mostly based around releasing throughout fall. But we do have a couple of concerts around Europe. Most of them are unannounced, but we’ll be playing in Paris on the 18th of may. Not sure what the place is called though, but we’ll post about it in the next week!
