INTERVIEW: APRIL JUNE

april june is a UK-born, Madrid-based bedroom pop artist.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a beautiful single ‘starstruck’, but let’s go back to 2022 when you put out a ‘stuck on you’ (w/ Yot Club) single. It has become a huge hit on streaming services with over 19 million streams on Spotify… did this success have a big impact on your career?

APRIL JUNE: I met Ryan (Yot Club) on SoundCloud, and we put this song together entirely online. It’s really special to me, and it definitely brought a lot of new listeners my way which I am super grateful for.

MOTEL VOID: ‘starstruck’ is a fifth song of your new record that you’re releasing a song by song – you started with ‘it’s all my fault’ in November, in January you put out ‘sweeter than drugs’, then ‘baby’s out of luck again’ and in March it was ’emotional problems’. How many more songs do you plan to release?

APRIL JUNE: There are two new singles coming out this summer, and I think they’re my favorites on the record.

MOTEL VOID: These songs are all connected by the same cover art (which is very beautiful, by the way!) by an artist Emma Thomas from Helsinki, Finland. How did you discover her work?

APRIL JUNE: I used to live in Helsinki where I studied art, and I met a lot of cool artists there that I still keep in touch with. It’s a small scene, so everybody kinda knows each other. I love Emma’s work and really wanted her vision to be a visual part of this album.

MOTEL VOID: Your songs are often mixed and mastered by a Brazilian music engineer Bernardo Martins, when did your cooperation start?

APRIL JUNE: Bernardo and I go way back! He started working with me when I had like zero listeners. I appreciate him so much because it meant a lot to have someone believe in me and support my early efforts.

MOTEL VOID: I heard a few of your Lana del Rey covers on Instagram, is she a big inspiration for you? And who are your other inspirations at the moment?

APRIL JUNE: Lana is definitely one of my biggest inspirations. She’s the best songwriter of our generation. Right now, I’m listening to Alex Cameron—I love how he writes songs from the perspective of different characters he creates, that really speaks to me. I’m also into jonatan leandoer96 (Yung Lean’s side project—it’s so cool to hear him sing in Swedish) and Nico rn.

MOTEL VOID: I haven’t found any footage of your shows on the internet. Do you play live shows? Or is ‘april june’ solely a ‘bedroom/studio’ project? Would you want to change that in the future?

APRIL JUNE: I’m a really shy person irl, so shows are nerve-racking for me. But I do plan to start playing live with a band this summer!
