MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released your new single, Crystalline. Could you tell us about the writing and recording process?
MOONPOOL: ‘Crystalline’ is one of those songs where the words came out before I really had time to think about what they meant. Looking at it now, the song deals with how grief and loss are transformative experiences. Some parts of the track feel melancholy and desperate but always return to some form of acceptance and growth. I think most people can relate to those moments where through some tragedy, they come to know themselves a lot better. We produced and recorded this track in house.
MOTEL VOID: Will this track be part of your upcoming album?
MOONPOOL: Yes, Crystalline is part of our upcoming EP “Nothing Sacred” which releases March 7th.
MOTEL VOID: You’re from Denver, Colorado. How would you describe the current music scene there? Do you have any favorite local artists and venues you would like to recommend?
MOONPOOL: The larger Denver scene is more centered around EDM, which no hate to the wooks and bass heads out there, isn’t really our cup of tea. Although there are some guitar bands out here that are really cool. I wouldn’t say there’s much of a precise Denver sound, but there are definitely unique voices out here in the realm of punk, indie and shoegaze. We love playing at the independent venues in town, especially Hi Dive. There’s also some DIY spots holding it down like D3 and Squirm.
MOTEL VOID: Who or what is your biggest inspiration right now?
MOONPOOL: To me I feel like this is a return to form, taking huge inspiration from the bands that made me fall in love with music in the first place: Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, all the synth heavy post punk that came out of the 80s. We were definitely informed by all the shoegaze and grunge in the current zeitgeist as well. Additionally Sonic Youth, DIIV, Deftones and Interpol.
MOTEL VOID: Do you have any plans to tour in support of your new songs?
MOONPOOL: We’re hitting a tour through the Pacific Northwest over here in the USA this summer.
