The best tracks that have come our way in the past week or so and that we highly recommend listening to…
Soot Sprite – Wield Your Hope Like A Weapon
The new album from Soot Sprite – highly anticipated here on our blog – has just been released, and it absolutely lives up to expectations. We’re spotlighting the title track, which stands out as one of the strongest moments on the record. And that’s saying something, considering we’ve already highlighted several excellent singles from this release.
With one of my all-time favorite bands, Hop Along, being relatively quiet in recent years, I’ve been craving something in that emotional, guitar-driven vein. This new Soot Sprite record fills that void beautifully. Catchy yet heartfelt melodies, dynamic shifts that keep you on your toes – it’s the kind of expressive indie rock that feels increasingly rare these days. Don’t miss it.
soapberry – grumpy cat on a crimson red leather couch
Next up is a recommendation from the Netherlands: the project soapberry. From the very first listen, I was struck by how much it reminded me of one of my favorites, Soccer Mommy. Soapberry has that same captivating vocal presence – distinct and emotive enough to carry even a minimalist track with ease.
Formerly part of the band Dakota, soapberry took a five-year hiatus after leaving the group and returned last year with a debut solo single. And what a return it was. A genuine talent that deserves your attention.
Meadows – River, Again
Meadows is the solo project of Winnipeg-based musician Isiah Schellenberg, which originally began in 2014 as a lo-fi phone-recording experiment. With River, Again, Meadows delivers a fully realized indie rock anthem.
The verses remind me of some of my favorite songs by Alex G, with their understated charm and intimacy. Then the chorus hits – with a poppier, more expansive sound that brings to mind classic ‘90s MTV anthems. But it’s the return to the verse that truly gets me – the melody is haunting, sticky, and totally unforgettable (and is that a banjo subtly tucked in the mix?).
