Rob Finlay is a British singer-songwriter and filmmaker who operates in the realm of alternative folk. His greatest asset is undoubtedly his voice – an instrument so striking that it has drawn comparisons to legendary vocalists like Tim Buckley.
His latest release, Sunset | Darkness | Sunrise, is a four-track EP introduced by the lead single Afterglow, an instantly catchy folk-pop gem. In a genre that often leans toward complexity or overwrought arrangements, Afterglow stands out for its natural flow, melodic clarity, and above all, Finlay’s dazzling vocal delivery. The track also benefits from top-tier production, handled by Adrian Hall (Tori Amos, Depeche Mode), with mastering by Andy Baldwin (Elton John, Oasis), adding a polished and professional sheen.
The song is accompanied by a high-quality music video featuring expressive dance elements. While I often gravitate toward raw, experimental DIY visuals, this video complements the song beautifully and enhances its emotional weight.
With a lineup of session musicians who have played with Feeder, Rag’n’Bone Man, Beyoncé, and Keane, this EP is nothing short of a treat for the ears. It opens with All Eyes Surrender, a tender, slow-burning piece tinged with melancholy and quiet introspection. The track stretches to nearly seven minutes, but Finlay’s evocative storytelling and vocal nuance hold the listener’s attention throughout. The arrangement remains restrained for most of the song, only to culminate in a gentle crescendo led by a captivating guitar solo.
Next comes the previously mentioned Afterglow, followed by Ballerina, which starts off with acoustic guitar and a classic indie folk sensibility. Gradually, more instruments join in, and the track builds into an epic, almost noise-laced finale complete with electric guitar.
The EP closes with what is, for me, its most emotionally affecting moment: In White. The song recalls the lyrical intimacy and sonic richness of Jeff Buckley, blending instrumental depth with stunning vocal performance. There’s a rawness here that feels almost torn from Grace, especially in the gritty, wailing guitar solo midway through the song.
I’m genuinely excited to hear what Rob Finlay will deliver next. Sunset | Darkness | Sunrise is a bold and beautiful showcase of talent and musicality – no surprise that his music has already brought him to stages at festivals like SXSW, The Great Escape, and Roskilde.
Highly recommended for fans of emotionally charged songwriting, cinematic arrangements, and voices that don’t just sing, but resonate.
