INTERVIEW: LAURIER

MOTEL VOID: To be honest, I couldn’t find much information about you online – could you tell us a bit about yourself? For example, what kind of projects were you involved in before starting Laurier?

LAURIER: Yeah I can’t imagine there would be. I was in a band in high school, I eventually took a step back from that and began doing things myself. I think that was like 2019, so since then I’ve been recording music by myself. I had a handful of singles before these two but they’ve since been scrubbed from the internet. I hope.

MOTEL VOID: This year you’ve released two singles – are you planning to put out a full album?

LAURIER: Yes, sometime early next year hopefully. We’ll see.

MOTEL VOID: Could you share a bit about how your songs come to life? Do you record everything yourself? And what DAW do you use?

LAURIER: I usually remember a song’s melody or lyrics or something, and then I go crazy trying to figure out what it is. Sometimes it doesn’t exist, so it’s mine, usually. It’s all me besides some of the mixing and mastering on the singles. I use Logic.

MOTEL VOID: You’re from Arkansas, which isn’t exactly known to me as an indie music hotspot – most projects I come across tend to come from New York or California. What’s the music scene like in Arkansas? Do you have any favorite venues or local bands? And what is it like for you to be part of the scene there?

LAURIER: It certainly is not lmao. There’s a very sparse “indie” music scene in my area of Arkansas, let alone the rest of the state. There are a few good bands like The Phlegms and Brother Moses, (who moved to New York) but besides that if there’s a scene I’m certainly not in the know. There are a few people making music around here that have gotten big on TikTok, though they certainly are not contributing to any local scenes.
