Nausicaa from Naarm/Melbourne began as a duo – Kristen (vocals/bass) and Dave (guitar, programming) – crafting a dreamy, shadowy, and beautifully subdued sound. In mid-2025, the project gained a surge of fresh momentum with the addition of drummer Cam, whose presence brought new depth and dynamic force to the band’s music. Nausicaa’s debut album arrives on May 2nd, and we’re highlighting the second single, The Darkest.

As the title suggests, The Darkest dives deep into shadowy shoegaze territory. Its central riff hovers somewhere between Sonic Youth and the The Smashing Pumpkins. The track carries a heavy, immersive atmosphere throughout, underscored by a wistful and melancholic vocal melody. Everything fits together seamlessly, and the raw, unpolished edge of the production adds a distinctive character that enhances the song’s emotional weight.
