BOLLARD – COMING UP SPRINGS
Melbourne sextet Bollard, featuring Tom Walsh, Lam Jushung (The Mirrors, Raindogs), Luke Scott (Highschool, Raindogs), Benton Ching, Wes Faulkner and Marni Walsh, are no strangers to our recommendations. Their second album, Lo, really caught our attention, and now they’re back with a new single, Coming Up Springs. Where to start? I absolutely love the raw sound this band has going for them, and the retro-style video is just as gorgeous. Everything feels carefully put together without losing that rough-around-the-edges charm. Both the riffs and the vocals wrap themselves around you with this wonderfully warm, comforting feeling. Really cool stuff!
PRETTY AVERAGE – ALL I WANTED, I FORGOT
Pretty Average bring a fresh musical perspective to Berlin, led by frontwoman Candy, whose songwriting aims to make a difference. Her smoky, rough-edged vocals are perfectly complemented by the distortion and raw sound she and Sergi have been developing since relocating from Barcelona to Berlin.
Their new track, All I Wanted, I Forgot, stretches to almost seven minutes, taking us on a hazy, shoegaze-tinged indie journey. The whole thing feels like being wrapped in a thick, gentle fog, with its almost monotonous quality becoming one of its greatest strengths. Rather than dragging, the repetition draws you deeper into the song, creating a wonderfully hypnotic atmosphere that’s easy to get lost in. A hazy, immersive trip from start to finish.
BS – F1
I honestly don’t know much about BS, but F1 grabbed my attention right from the first listen. It’s got that bedroom-pop production I love, paired with a cheeky, slightly bratty attitude that gives the whole thing plenty of character. The track is catchy, straightforward and confident, but what really stands out is the wonderfully thick production. The guitars sitting in the background sound absolutely brilliant, adding weight and texture without getting in the way of the hook. A seriously catchy track that makes a strong first impression!
