INTERVIEW: AMPHIGORY

Amphigory is a singer-songwriter from Laytown, Ireland.

MOTEL VOID: I haven’t found much information about you on the internet. Could you introduce your project in a few sentences?

AMPHIGORY: Sure, my name is Amphigory and I started making music just over 2 years ago now. The project I am working on right now started late March with ‘Just Stay‘ being the first song. Everything I do is all done by myself in my spare time using a cheap audio interface and my computer, but it’s something I enjoy more than anything, whether it’s the production side of it, or writing the songs themselves.

MOTEL VOID: I like that raw lo-fi sound of your music. What kind of DAW do you use?

AMPHIGORY: I record my songs myself, from the tracking to the mastering. I’m no professional of course, but like most artists, I try to save money where I can. I currently use Ableton’s cheapest version which means I am limited to only 8 tracks per project, so whenever I need to record vocals. I have to export the whole instrumental into another project. It’s time consuming, but it also stops me from getting distracted from just doing vocals.

MOTEL VOID: You’ve just released a new single ‘Just Stay’, will it be part of your new EP/album? What was the writing process behind it?

AMPHIGORY: Yes, ‘Just Stay‘ is going to be part of an album coming this summer. The whole album is complete now, I’m just adding finishing touches and making sure everything is ready to go. I decided to venture back into making music following on from a lot of hardship in my life, and wanted to use it as a way to express my emotions. I also wanted others to be able to hear it and not feel like they are alone in their struggles.

MOTEL VOID: Who are your biggest inspirations right now?

AMPHIGORY: Right now I think the main one has got to be Liam McCay from sign crushes motorist, birth day, take care etc. I saw him live in Dublin last month and it was great, on of the best concerts I have been to. Other people that inspire me would be Sweet Boy from Australia. I’ve had the pleasure of talking to him a few times, and showed him some of my songs which he enjoyed! Lost times of youth, is an Irish slowcore artist I’ve been chatting with a lot recently, he’s only released a demo currently but he’s definitely got a lot of potential.

MOTEL VOID: If I’m not mistaken, you’re based in Dublin? How would you describe current indie music scene there? Do you have any favorite local venues and artists?

AMPHIGORY: Close enough haha. I’m just outside of Dublin in a place called Laytown on the East Coast. The current music scene is decent near here, there’s a town not far from here which has a pretty good indie music scene, primarily involving more rock sounding bands. But in Dublin, Whelan’s is the venue where I saw Liam McCay performing, and it is a very small venue, only holding around 500 or so people. It would honestly be a big dream of mine to get to play somewhere like there, it just felt like such a close community of people.
