Raw Soul is a Canadian rapper based in Vancouver, originally born in Tripoli, Libya. He began releasing music in 2020 (on streaming services) and has already built an impressively prolific catalog, with dozens of tracks under his belt. His latest release so far is the album Still High…, a project that showcases not only his versatility, but also a clear artistic confidence and maturity.
The album opens with Run Free, a track that immediately reminded me of one of my personal favorites, Mac Miller. There’s a similarly warm and laid-back atmosphere floating throughout the song – the kind of vibe that naturally puts a smile on your face and feels perfect for long summer evenings. From the very first moments, it’s obvious that both the production and Raw Soul’s flow are operating on a remarkably high level. Everything sounds effortless, polished, and immersive.
A similar quality carries into the second track, the title song Still High, although this time the cadence feels slightly more aggressive and energetic. At moments, it even brought Run the Jewels to mind. The dynamic rap delivery contrasts beautifully with the smoother and more relaxed instrumental layers underneath, creating a compelling balance between intensity and calmness.
The third song, In Need (of Healing), is easily the most experimental piece on the record so far. The track flirts with gospel-inspired textures and jazzy undertones, giving it a rich and soulful atmosphere. It becomes increasingly clear here that Raw Soul is already a highly experienced artist – he’s capable of blending genres naturally and convincingly, and everything feels intentional and cohesive. In this sense, he somewhat resembles the musical chameleon Kendrick Lamar.
The fourth track, Skyscrapers, takes a rawer and more direct approach. It’s energetic, sharp, and highly engaging, pulling the listener in almost instantly. The following two songs, Perseverance and I’m Going (Letting Go), return to the album’s more relaxed, playful, and carefree atmosphere, while still maintaining Raw Soul’s distinctive authenticity and convincing vocal presence. I’m Going (Letting Go) stands out as one of my personal highlights – it’s catchy, and the late-night jazz club aesthetic fits the song perfectly.
A similar mood continues with the seventh track, On My Way. The penultimate song, Lenses, shifts the atmosphere once again, becoming darker and more stripped-back. Its heavy basslines create an almost eerie feeling, adding a more introspective and shadowy tone to the album. This darker mood deepens even further on the closing track, To Whom It May Concern. The instrumental feels inspired by musical cultures and traditions not immediately associated with rap music, yet Raw Soul’s compelling delivery and brilliant flow tie everything together seamlessly.
Overall, Still High… feels like the work of an artist who already has a strong understanding of his identity and creative direction. Raw Soul effortlessly moves between laid-back jazz-infused moods, rawer hip-hop energy, and more experimental sonic landscapes, all while maintaining a coherent and authentic voice.
